According to the data of trendforce, in 2021, Taiwan Province won 64% of the global wafer OEM market, ranking first in the world. It is estimated that in 2022, Taiwan Province will take 66% of the global wafer OEM revenue.

In terms of regions, South Korea is the second largest, with 18% of the wafer OEM share in 2021 and 17% in 2022. As for Chinese Mainland, it will increase from 7% in 2021 to 8% in 2022.

From the perspective of specific process, it is expected that the 16nm or even more advanced process of wafer foundry manufacturers in Taiwan, China will account for 61% of the global market in 2022.

While Chinese Mainland is superior in mature technology. In the global 8-inch wafer production capacity, Chinese Mainland will account for 21%, Japan will account for 16%, Taiwan, China, Europe and the Middle East will each account for 15%.

Obviously, from these data, there are two trends at present. One is that Taiwan province continues to make efforts in advanced chip technology, becoming stronger and stronger, and constantly advances to 3nm, 2nm and other technologies.

Chinese Mainland, on the other hand, is based on mature technology and constantly expanding its production capacity. It first develops 28nm and above processes, and then steadily develops first-class domestic supply chain, and then slowly advances to advanced processes.

Why are these two trends? This is because the semiconductor industry chain relies on the synergy between upstream (raw materials, equipment and wafers), midstream (IP design services, IC design, manufacturing, packaging and testing) and downstream (brands and distributors).

Taiwan Province has advantages in terms of talents, geographical convenience and industrial enclaves. The most important thing is that technology, equipment, materials and talents are not restricted. Therefore, we can confidently and boldly study advanced manufacturing processes.

However, due to well-known reasons, the mainland lacks such key equipment as EUV lithography machine, and it is difficult to make progress in the advanced manufacturing process at present. Therefore, it can only complete the mature process that it can handle first, and wait for the domestic supply chain to catch up, and rely on the mainland itself to form a complete and advanced semiconductor supply chain, so there is no restriction.

Judging from the current market demand in China, the domestic mature process capacity can not meet the market demand at all. Some academicians said that the current capacity of Chinese design companies has reached the capacity of 8 core cores.

Therefore, even if the wafer factories in the mainland continue to expand the production of 28nm and other processes, there is no need to worry about overcapacity. This may be the basis for mainland manufacturers to continuously expand the production of mature processes.
